Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about custom app development, pricing, process, and working with me.

Pricing & Budget

How much does a custom app cost?

Most MVPs range from $15,000–$40,000 depending on scope and complexity. Simple business tools start around $15,000, while full-featured mobile apps typically run $25,000–$40,000. I provide detailed quotes after understanding your specific requirements.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes. Projects are divided into three equal payments: 33% before development starts, 33% upon delivery of the initial draft, and 33% before final deployment. This protects both of us and keeps the project moving forward.

What if my budget is lower than your typical range?

I'm happy to discuss phased approaches where we build core features first and add functionality over time as budget allows. For very simple needs, my starter website service starts at $249/month.

Are there any hidden fees?

No. All costs are outlined upfront in the proposal. The only additional costs would be third-party services you choose (like payment processors, SMS services, etc.), which are always discussed and approved beforehand.

Do you charge for estimates or consultations?

Initial consultations and project quotes are free. I only charge once we agree to move forward with development.

Process & Timeline

How long does development take?

Most MVPs take 6-12 weeks from kickoff to launch. Complex apps may take 12–16 weeks. Timeline depends on scope, number of features, and how quickly you can provide feedback during development.

What if my requirements change mid-project?

Minor changes and refinements are included in the two revision rounds. Major scope changes (new features, significant redesigns) would require a new proposal and adjusted timeline.

How involved do I need to be during development?

You'll need to provide requirements and assets upfront, review the initial draft, and provide feedback during revision rounds. Total time commitment is typically 3–5 hours spread across the project timeline.

Can you work faster for a rush project?

Sometimes, depending on my current workload. Rush projects may include a premium. Contact me to discuss your specific timeline needs.

What happens if the project takes longer than expected?

If delays are on my end, the timeline extends at no additional cost. If delays are due to feedback/approvals from your side, we'll adjust the timeline together. Fixed-price projects stay fixed unless scope changes significantly.

Can another developer work on my project during active development?

No. During the active development period, the project must remain under my sole authority to ensure code quality, consistency, and proper coordination. Bringing in additional developers mid-project creates confusion, conflicts, and usually delays delivery. If you anticipate needing multiple developers, designers, etc, we must discuss this and establish a coordination plan before development starts. Once your app is launched and you're on a maintenance or retainer plan, you're free to bring in additional help for specific tasks.

Technical

What technologies do you use?

I specialize in React for web applications, React Native for mobile apps, and Node.js for backends. I also work with MongoDB, SQL databases, and modern hosting infrastructure. I choose technologies based on what's best for your specific project, not what's trendy.

Will my app work on both iPhone and Android?

Yes, if built with React Native. This is the most cost-effective approach for most businesses. Native development for each platform separately is available but significantly more expensive.

Can you integrate with my existing systems?

Most likely, yes. I regularly integrate with payment processors (Stripe, PayPal), CRMs, email services, and custom APIs. We'll discuss your specific integration needs during the discovery phase.

Do you handle app store submissions?

Yes. I manage the entire deployment process including App Store and Google Play submissions, certificates, and getting your app live.

What about hosting and servers?

I handle all hosting setup and can either manage hosting for you ($300/month) or set it up for your team to manage. I use reliable infrastructure (NGINX on Linux, or cloud services when appropriate).

Is the app secure?

Yes. Security is built in from the start including SSL certificates, secure authentication, data encryption, and following industry best practices. I also handle ongoing security updates as part of maintenance packages.

Ownership & Rights

Do I own the code?

Yes. Full intellectual property transfer happens upon final payment. You own everything—code, designs, and all assets.

Can I hire another developer to work on it later?

Absolutely. You own the code and can hire anyone you want. I write clean, documented code that other developers can understand and work with.

What if I want to cancel the project?

You can cancel anytime, but payments already made are non-refundable as they cover work already completed. You'll receive all code and work completed up to that point.

Working Together

Do you work with clients outside Seattle?

Yes. I work with clients nationwide. Most communication happens via email and video calls. Physical location doesn't matter for most projects.

How do we communicate during the project?

Primarily via email for initial requirements, updates, and questions. Video calls for kickoff, major milestones, and when needed for complex discussions. I respond to emails within 48 hours (usually much faster).

Do you sign NDAs?

For established businesses with truly proprietary information, I'm open to reasonable confidentiality agreements. For new app ideas, I generally don't sign NDAs before initial discussions. Happy to discuss what makes sense for your specific situation.

Can we meet in person?

If you're in the Seattle area, we can meet in person after the initial consultation. Most of the work happens remotely regardless of location.

What if I'm not happy with the work?

Two rounds of revisions are included to ensure you're satisfied. I want you to love the final product. If there are issues, we'll work together to resolve them before final payment and deployment.

After Launch

What happens after my app launches?

You can choose ongoing hosting and maintenance ($300/month), a development retainer ($5,000/month for ongoing improvements), or pay hourly for updates as needed. Many clients start with basic hosting and add features over time.

Who handles updates and bug fixes?

Bug fixes are included in the hosting package. New features and functionality changes are billed separately (hourly or via retainer).

What if something breaks?

If you're on a hosting plan, I monitor uptime and fix technical issues. If it's a bug from the original development, I fix it at no charge. If it's due to third-party service changes or new feature requests, that's billed separately.

Can you add features later?

Yes. Many clients launch with an MVP and add features over time based on user feedback. This is actually the recommended approach—launch fast, learn, then build what users actually want.

How long will you support my app?

As long as you need. GetRawMilk.com has been running for 7+ years with ongoing support. I'm in this for long-term relationships, not one-off projects.

Still Have Questions?
